RETN invites students in local colleges and high schools to become working members of the RETN professional team by enrolling in an internship or practicum. These work experiences are available for academic credit each fall, spring and summer. While the specific nature of intern positions changes somewhat from term to term, the following internships are available each academic term, and students can apply directly to RETN or work through their schools.

Full descriptions and prerequisites are available from RETN, and these opportunities can be developed as internship, practicurn, school-to-work, community service or independent study experiences as well.

Digital Video Technology Intern

available for limited number of students every fall, spring and summer term
In RETN's premiere internship opportunity spring semester, the student will work directly with RETN professional staff and consultants on ongoing technical development in a collaborative atmosphere working on overall RETN digital video distribution and internal computer network operations; planning and creating systems for evolving media; preparing for training for professionals and other community members working with RETN in live and pre-recorded digital video production and distribution; developing, implementing, and maintaining digital video standards and quality control. Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills critical. Interest in research, development and planning for technology essential. Desirable candidate will be innovative, communicative, enthusiastic and patient.

Prerequisite: Ideal candidate will have working knowledge of Linux, Macintosh and Windows environments and strong knowledge of emerging technologies, especially in the field of digital video and Internet video. Knowledge of networking and network administration important. Competent programming in PHP 4 & 5, as well as core knowledge of mySQL and MS Access also ideal. Drupal installation, maintenance, and development skills will be needed and can be learned during internship. Strong computer and internet skills, along with verbal and written skills essential. An attitude agreeable to rapid pace, flexibility and attention to detail necessary. Ability to work professionally and independently and meet deadlines required. Academic background in technology, multi-media, communications, or other appropriate fields preferred.

Television & Video Production Intern


available for limited number of students every fall, spring and summer term
Student works with RETN production personnel to create local programs with elementary, middle and high schools; colleges and universities; local educational organizations; and independent educational program producers in Vermont. Student will work on multiple camera live and taped productions and single camera electronic field productions, as well as working on various aspects of pre-production and post-production in a fully digital facility. Student will also be involved with some operations and administrative support in a fast-paced environment operating two 24-hour educational cable channels in northwestern Vermont, supporting a comprehensive web site, and providing professional development support for educators.

Prerequisite: Some basic knowledge of video production needed, and students with completed course work or academic concentrations in communications, journalism, education, media, English, technology or other related fields are preferred.

Website Development Intern

available for limited number of students every fall, spring and summer term
Student will work directly with RETN professional staff and consultants on ongoing development of the RETN web site at www.retn.org. Student will be involved in creating and maintaining workable, navigable web site for small, but vibrant, not-for-profit educational organization. The RETN web site has been developed using PHP, mySQL, and a dynamic database design. Transition to the application Drupal will be involved in the spring of 2007. Student will also be involved with some operations and administrative support in a fast-paced environment operating two 24-hour educational cable channels in northwestern Vermont, supporting a comprehensive web site, and providing professional development support for educators.

Prerequisite: Strong computer and internet skills, along with verbal and written skills essential. An attitude agreeable to rapid pace, flexibility and attention to detail necessary. Ability to work professionally and independently and meet deadlines required. Academic background in multi-media, communications, business or other appropriate fields preferred.

Marketing Intern


available for limited number of students every fall, spring and summer term
Student will work with RETN personnel to develop and implement ongoing promotion strategy for RETN activities, including presentation of two 24-hour educational cable channels and extensive web site. Marketing activities involve television, Internet, radio, newspaper, magazine and display media. As a not-for-profit educational organization, RETN focuses on learning activities and work with community and educational institutions throughout northwestern Vermont. Student activities include new and ongoing projects and initiatives. Student will also be involved with some operations and administrative support in a fast-paced environment operating two 24-hour educational cable channels in northwestern Vermont, supporting a comprehensive web site, and providing professional development support for educators.

Prerequisite: Some background in marketing is necessary. Creative thinkers preferred. Strong organizational, writing and computer skills and ability to work on the telephone essential. Academic background in communications, business, education, design or other appropriate areas preferred.

Program Producer Intern


available for limited number of qualified students every fall, spring and summer term
In this advanced internship, student works with RETN production and administrative personnel as well as with executive producers from RETN-affiliated organizations to develop specific project(s) from start to finish. Student will be expected to take initiative on programs or a series to conduct research, develop contacts, plan shooting, oversee production, complete post-production and see the project(s) through to final presentation and cablecast. Student will also be involved with some operations and administrative support in a fast-paced environment operating two 24-hour educational cable channels in northwestern Vermont, supporting a comprehensive web site, and providing professional development support for educators.

Prerequisite: Some experience in both television production and research is essential. General knowledge of process of television program development is important, and the ability to work independently and professionally with community contacts is critical. Academic background in communications, education, English or other appropriate areas preferred. Good writing and verbal skills, including telephone skills, are necessary.
